After two years of research I finished my doctorate study (with a “Dr.-Ing.”) about “Space Oscillators at 5MHz with Maximum Stability between 1 and 10 Seconds”. My professor is Ulrich L. Rohde (see Rohde and Schwarz, and also a radio amateur N1UL).
I liked the times of intensive research a lot, especially in Corona times. The vast majority of the experiments could be done in my home lab, due to an FSWP phase noise analyzer I got on loan from the Brandenburg University (sponsored by Prof. Rohde).
Although 5MHz oscillators sound very classic, they are still the best crystal oscillators even today. And, to my utter surprise, a lot of common theories of how they work were not correct. So, I was lucky to discover something new in an “old” problem, and it was a challenge to find out what was really going on.
But now (see photo above, from Monty Pythons sketch “How not to be seen”), I am looking for something completely different …
Congratulations on a huge achievement! Enjoy reading your blog, very interesting stuff.
